{"id":9562,"date":"2019-12-02T07:00:09","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T14:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/?p=9562"},"modified":"2020-01-22T12:23:41","modified_gmt":"2020-01-22T19:23:41","slug":"this-week-in-history-dec-1st-7th","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/this-week-in-history-dec-1st-7th\/","title":{"rendered":"This Week in History, Dec. 1st &#8211; 7th."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u201cAs long as I live, I will never be a party to anything as un\u2010American as a blacklist,\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1973\/03\/25\/archives\/to-name-or-not-to-name-the-hollywood-10-recalled.html?auth=link-dismiss-google1tap\">Eric Johnston, president of the MPAA<\/a>, who in 1947 did an about face with his involvement with <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waldorf_Statement\">The Waldorf Statement<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This week in 1947 The Waldorf Statement was released.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In October of 1947,<\/strong>\u00a0the House Un-American Activities Committee subpoenaed ten filmmakers to testify about their alleged subversive political beliefs. After these \u201cHollywood Ten\u201d refused to testify, exercising their First Amendment Privileges, they were cited for contempt of Congress, for which they were ultimately imprisoned and blacklisted \u2013 prevented from gainful employment \u2013 by the Hollywood studios and broadcast networks. By 1951, as a result of ongoing Congressional hearings, hundreds more were blacklisted, harassed, or driven from their jobs, and in some cases from their homes<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9573\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9573\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-9573 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Nine_of_the_Hollywood_10_charged_with_contempt_of_Congress_1947-300x228.jpg\" alt=\"Archive photo of nine members of the &quot;Hollywood Ten&quot;.\" width=\"300\" height=\"228\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Nine_of_the_Hollywood_10_charged_with_contempt_of_Congress_1947-300x228.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Nine_of_the_Hollywood_10_charged_with_contempt_of_Congress_1947-768x583.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.clarkcollegelibraries.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Nine_of_the_Hollywood_10_charged_with_contempt_of_Congress_1947.jpg 791w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9573\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Archive photo of nine members of the &#8220;Hollywood Ten&#8221; <sup>2<\/sup><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Waldorf Statement<\/strong>\u00a0was a two-page press release issued on December 3, 1947, by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_Johnston\">Eric Johnston<\/a>, president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motion_Picture_Association_of_America\">Motion Picture Association of America<\/a>, following a closed-door meeting by forty-eight\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motion_picture\">motion picture<\/a>\u00a0company executives at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Waldorf-Astoria_Hotel\">Waldorf-Astoria Hotel<\/a>. The Statement was a response to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Contempt_of_Congress\">contempt of Congress<\/a>\u00a0charges against the so-called &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hollywood_blacklist#The_Hollywood_Ten\">Hollywood Ten<\/a>&#8220;.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The statement was considered the beginning of the Hollywood Blacklist.
