This week the city of Athens, GA will celebrate Harriet Powers Day.\u00a0 A former slave, Quiltmaker Harriet Powers was born this week in 1837<\/a>.\u00a0 Her work is\u00a0considered among the finest examples of Southern quilting from the 19th century.<\/p>\n

One of only two surviving examples of her work, the \u201cBible Quilt\u201d<\/a> is currently exhibited in the Smithsonian.<\/p>\n

This week marks the beginning of D\u00eda de Muertos,<\/em> anglicized as the Day of the Dead, a celebration that honors friends and family members who have passed away.<\/p>\n
