In Waterloo, New York the day was first celebrated in 1866 by decorating the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags. In 1968 Decoration Day became known as Memorial Day and became an official federal holiday in 1971.<\/p>\n<p>The tradition of decorating military graves continues today and some people wear a red poppy. The custom of wearing a red poppy was inspired by a World War I poem <strong><em>In Flanders Fields<\/em> <\/strong>by John McCrae.<\/p>\n<p><em>In Flanders fields the poppies blow<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Between the crosses, row on row,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That mark our place; and in the sky<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The larks, still bravely singing, fly<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Scarce heard amid the guns below.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>We are the Dead. Short days ago<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Loved and were loved, and now we lie,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Flanders fields.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Take up our quarrel with the foe:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To you from failing hands we throw<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The torch; be yours to hold it high.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If ye break faith with us who die<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We shall not sleep, though poppies grow<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In Flanders fields.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1922 the <strong>Veterans of Foreign Wars<\/strong> distributed the first United States remembrance poppies on Memorial Day. Today, the <strong>American Legion Auxiliary<\/strong> receives donations for crepe-paper poppies on both Memorial Day and Veterans Day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can make you own<\/strong> <strong>Remembrance Poppy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What You Will Need:<\/p>\n<p>Red felt<\/p>\n<p>Black button with 4 holes<\/p>\n<p>Black seed beads<\/p>\n<p>Pins<\/p>\n<p>Red embroidery thread<\/p>\n<p>Black and red thread<\/p>\n<p>Quilting needle<\/p>\n<p>Beading needle<\/p>\n<p>Instructions:<\/p>\n<p>Print out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clipartbest.com\/clipart-9cRgBAGri\">free template<\/a>. Place a black button in the center of the smaller layer; next add the middle size, and then the larger. Using the black thread, attach all of these layers together through the button holes, stringing seed beads on the thread, \u00a0threading over the button, and through to the back.
