Book Lovers Day

August 9th is Book Lovers Day

Book Lovers Day is an unofficial holiday that is meant to celebrate reading and literature. Little is known about the identity of the person or group that started this bibliophile tradition. Indeed, even the timeline of when the holiday was established is murky. Regardless, the idea is to turn off screens and pick up a book.

Ways to celebrate:

Read! A book, periodical, or graphic novel, all of which can be found here at Cannell. Unplug and unwind with a good read and your favorite drink or snack. While we don’t have them in our catalog, many public libraries also have audiobooks available and those still count as reading. After all, before books and the written word we passed on stories in the oral fashion which makes audiobooks a sort of proto-book.
Visit a library or bookstore. Support your local libraries and bookstores by checking out or buying a book. Just in Clark County there are 10 public libraries in the Fort Vancouver Regional Library district, 1 municipal public library in Camas, and 2 academic libraries in Vancouver. A quick internet or map search shows as many as 12 bookstores in Clark County.
Host a book club. Get friends together and read together and discuss your favorite books.
Attend a bookish event. Author readings, poetry slams, and book release parties are great ways to support publishers and artists
Donate books to a tiny free library or used bookstore. You have to make room on your shelves for the new books you’ll pick up from your local library or indie bookstore and putting those old books back out into the world is a good way to do it. Maybe that book at the bottom of your shelf that you don’t plan to re-read is the next favorite for someone picking up their next read for Book Lovers Day.
